Evaluation Framework

Review & Comparison Policy

Understanding our specification-based research method, evaluation criteria, and structural evidence limits.

Evidence Limitation Statement

Kerf & Focal conducts technical comparisons using published specifications, documented engineering standards, and verified operator guides. We do not operate an internal destructive testing laboratory, nor do we report synthetic cut-speed benchmarks or physical teardown metrics as proprietary empirical tests. All performance ceilings referenced represent manufacturer claims or physics-based baseline constraints for given laser wavelengths.

Three-Tier Evidence Ledger

Our reviews and comparisons separate information into three distinct tiers so you can assess the reliability of every claim:

Tier 1: Seller Claims

Single-pass cutting depths, maximum travel speeds (e.g., 24,000 mm/min), and total machine power numbers sourced directly from marketing materials, clearly tagged as vendor-reported figures.

Tier 2: Documented Standards

Optical physics fundamentals, including spot size dimensions, beam divergence, optical density ratings for eyewear, and wavelength material absorption limits (e.g., blue diode transparent acrylic limitation).

Tier 3: Editorial Guidance

Synthesized recommendations on ergonomics, necessary add-on gear (air-assist pumps, honeycomb pins, rotary rollers), and workspace safety overhead before purchasing.

Primary Evaluation Criteria

  • Optical Power Output: We inspect whether the unit delivers true rated laser energy or combines multiple low-power diodes.
  • Wavelength Compatibility: Suitability for intended materials (450nm for organics/wood, 1064nm for plastics/metals, 10,600nm for clear glass/acrylics).
  • Enclosure & Ventilation: Assessment of integrated draft fans, exhaust port dimensions (e.g., 3-inch or 4-inch ducting), and emergency interlocks.
  • Total Studio Cost: Inclusion of necessary operation accessories (honeycomb beds, inline exhaust fans, air assist) to determine real startup costs.
